Need to quickly chill a bottle of wine?

Main Post:

Wrap paper towels around the bottle and then soak it with water, put it in the freezer and it will be chilled between 5-10 minutes.

I need help quick! Chicken Marsala???

Main Post:

Im 20 years old and I want to make my girlfriend a nice dinner but I have never really cooked before. Like at all. Like I don't know fucking anything.

For example, tonight I went to the grocery store with my list and expected to buy "dry Marsala" next to the parsley or thyme... turns out Marsala is a wine. Not a spice. Well, I'm not 21 so I couldn't buy Marsala even if I wanted to.

Which brings me to now. I have everything else I need to make this damn thing, but I only have 2 hours until she comes home and I don't want to surprise her with a steaming plate of hot shit so I could really use some of your help! We do have a few wines in the fridge. Barefoot Pinot Grigio, 1 Barefoot Sweet Red Blend, 1 Barefoot Riesling, and 2 Proseccos; Barefoot and Ruffino. This is the recipe I plan on using. Thank you!

Ask someone buy it for you?

Or use the barefoot red blend, put a little more than you need in a separate pan (4oz) heat to a simmer shut off and taste it. Add a tsp of red wine vinegar, if you don't have this go for white wine vinegar, champagne vinegar, apple cider or white balsamic. Add a ever so small pinch of salt and a crack of fresh pepper. Let simmer for 20 minutes..you are trying to kill the sugar content of the barefoot. Taste again. Then measure your 1/3c from this reduction.

Add a few extra mushrooms and cook the shallot a little less.

Also she will be impressed more by the fact that you cooked dinner for her and not so much on how it tastes if you can follow the recipe you are golden. I'm a chef and will keep my phone close for the next two hours if you need help message me.

Quick question about WINE: What folders/files are created when I install something via wine

Main Post:

I want to know what folders/files are created (other than the .wine folder) when I install something via wine.

I followed this tutorial to disable winemenubuilder, but I want to know if there is anything else that I'm missing

I'm pretty noob with linux... been using it for years now, but only on a superficial level.

Top Comment: If you run winetricks sandbox On your Wine installation, it'll stop polluting your actual home directory with files that belong in Wine's documents folder. This also prevents wine from opening .exe's that are outside of your .wine folder, however.

Quick question about a wine called "Foggy Veil"

Main Post:

Just curious because I tried this wine tonight at a buddies place and the label just seemed all too familiar to me. It had the same style as sea smoke labels do with the elaborate cursive design. Is this a second label from SS? They are both in Santa Barbara, similar design.. I tried searching on mobile but not much popped up. The blend I tried was the 75/25 Syrah Grenache which was actually not bad at all for the price point. I know some higher tier labels often offshoot a second label for cheaper price points but I know this label isn't marketing the high end Pinot and blends SS does typically. Anyways sorry if this is a dumb question just something that was bugging me tonight at his function.

I am a Newbie to wine. What are the most important things for me to know?

Main Post:

I want to get deeper into wine, but there is so much information out there. some questions I have are

  • How do I pick a good bottle
  • When should I drink it
  • How do I let wine age
  • Should I aerate wine
  • How many bottles should I buy to start
  • What should I look for when tasting
  • How do I find bottles that fit my taste
  • what equipment do I need
  • Where should I buy my wine

Thank you for your help, I am excited to start out on this adventure.

Edit: Wow! Thank you for all the kind words and helpful advice. I just downloaded Vivino, and am ordering wine folly. I will also be visiting my local wine store once the pandemic is over, but that could be a while.

Top Comment: How do I pick a good bottle Easiest way for a beginner is to go to a respected wine store and talk to the staff. Tell them what you like and what you are looking to spend. Ask them specifically for good value wines. I would say generally stay away from the stuff promoted in wine magazines etc until you know more about what you like. The popular stuff is priced at a premium and unless you know generally what to expect from a certain region/vintage you can end up with an expensive disappointment. When should I drink it Around 95% of wine purchased in NA is consumed within 24 hours of purchase. I'm guessing probably similar elsewhere in the world. As a result, most wine in stores is designed to drink young. Until you know what you like there is very little point in buying wine to age, as again you might just wait years for a disappointment. How do I let wine age Once you are ready to age wine, ideally in a dark, cool space with little variance in temperature. Bottles with corks should be aged on their side, for screw tops it doesn't really matter. Should I aerate wine To start I would recommended trying wines you open both aerated and not. This will help you get and idea of which wines should and should not be aerated. Aside from this, a good rule of thumb is the more tannins you expect in a wine, the more you should prioritize aeration. This isn't always the case, and even some white wines benefit from aeration, but it's a good place to start, especially for young wines (older wines are less likely to require it, again generally speaking). How many bottles should I buy to start Totally dependent on the space you have and your budget. I only buy wine 6 bottles at a time or more unless it's something new/different I want to check out, but I have a large cellar and set aside a yearly budget. What should I look for when tasting Google Systematic Approach to Tasting and watch a YouTube video, then download a Systematic Approach to Tasting cheat sheet. How do I find bottles that fit my taste As you learn about the world of wine you will discover which regions make wine with characteristics you enjoy. The Wine Bible is a good place to start. Until then, find a website with a description of various regions, and go buy wine from the ones that sound good to you. Or again, ask at a reputable wine shop. what equipment do I need To enjoy wine you just need a decent wine glass, a corkscrew and some good friends. Where should I buy my wine If looking for recommendations a good wine shop. If you already know what you want then try to find a bulk discount somewhere.
